Adoption question...?

I live in florida and am wondering how my husband can adopt my daughter. We havn't seen or heard from her father in over a year. Can we just go to the courthouse and file or do we have to go through an attorney? I will say that the state took her father's taxes so there has been some child support but not by his doings. Her father's name is not on the birthcertificate and we were never married. Thanks for your help
