Why do people put confederate flags on their cars and hang them in the south? The confederates lost the war...?

I don't understand why people still hang confederate flags. They lost to the union and the confederate states are now just part of the united states. Why do they hang onto the flag and say they're a confederate? I don't get it. It doesn't exist anymore. Please explain.
