Are Democrats becoming so unpopular that they have to go to Canada to raise money for their campaigns?

It isn't a surprise. Democrats opened their primaries to "Overseas Americans" that turned out to allow foreign nationals to vote in their elections. Then they were able to turn of their credit card check that identified the national origin of donors to Obama's campaign.
